Deep Cleaning House Checklist

Deep Cleaning House Checklist

If you need to give your house a deep clean, then the chances are you won't know where to start. We do this for a living and offer a deep clean service, so we know that those of you who choose to do it yourself must struggle.

So, to help you tackle deep cleaning your house, we've put together a deep cleaning checklist that's filled with deep cleaning tips and tricks that will make the whole process much easier. We'll even break it down room by room so you can scratch each task off the list as you go.

Whether you're planning on tackling deep house cleaning alone, or you're interested in the tasks we'll tackle when you hire us to carry out one of our deep house cleaning services at your home, read on below. It's filled with everything you need to know to get your entire house in order.

Everything You'll Need For A Deep Clean

It doesn't matter why you've decided to carry out a deep clean of your home. Maybe it's to do some long overdue spring cleaning, or maybe there's a special event coming up that means you need your home to be absolutely spotless.

Whatever the case, the secret to success is being prepared beforehand. That means picking out all the right cleaning products, cleaning materials, and cleaning equipment to get the job done.

Since we'll be providing you with a list of tasks later, we'll only include the main products you'll need to get started, but be sure to check out our deep clean checklist below because as we speak about different tasks you might be able to think of additional products to help you out. For example, if you need help unclogging drains, then you might pick out a drain unblocker at the store, but not everyone will need this to get started since some people's drains will be fine.

So, here are the basic supplies you will need when deep house cleaning:

  • baking soda
  • warm soapy water (regular dish soap will do for a lot of the tasks below)
  • glass cleaner spray bottle
  • wood cleaner or polish
  • damp microfiber cloth (the more the better)
  • cleaning cloths or old towels
  • paper towels
  • vacuum
  • steam cleaner (if possible)
  • scrub brush
  • rubber gloves
  • 2 buckets - one for clean water and one for dirty water
  • old toothbrush
  • laundry detergent and access to a laundry room/washing machine

As a starting point, this will be all you need, but you may have specific products you like to use around the house too. This deep cleaning house checklist is a guide only, so be sure to add to it yourself with products and tasks you think are necessary if we miss any.

Remember, you're deep cleaning your house, so customise this list so it suits you better.

Deep Cleaning Checklist

Now let's get started on the tasks you will need to carry out during your house cleaning to deep clean it effectively. Our cleaning checklist has been broken down per room to help you with your home deep cleaning:

Bathroom

  • Dusting

Start by dusting everywhere. All the hard surfaces, the ceiling fans, vent covers, walls and baseboards. Look for signs of dust or cobwebs and tackle this first.

  • Flooring

Don't forget to tackle your flooring. Clean your hard floors by first vacuuming/brushing up and then mopping it. Cleaning your flooring should be the last task you do to ensure you don't walk any new messes in after finishing whilst the floor is drying still.

  • Bathtub, Shower, Sink & Toilet

These are the biggest tasks in the bathroom. Remove the shower curtain if you have one. Shower curtains get damp and can start to smell easily, so start by throwing your shower curtain in the washing machine along with any towels and bath mats to get them clean.

Then complete tasks like disinfecting the toilet, clean out the bathtub, clean the shower floor and glass (use glass cleaner on the shower door), and clean the sink of any soap scum/soap residue.

  • Hard Surfaces And Touch Points

Tackle the hard surfaces and touch points. That means you should clean light fixtures, light switches, and door frames and door knobs too.

  • Mirrors And Windows

Next up are the window treatments and mirrors in the bathroom. Clean windows, window frames and window sills. Clean mirror using glass cleaner and wipe clean.

  • Grout

It's important that you tackle tile grout in the bathroom too. Use an old toothbrush and warm soapy water to get started. The warm water ought to shift the discolouration, but if not, add a little baking soda to the water and dish soap blend to help remove the dirt from the grout.

  • Organisation

Finish up with some organisation. Throw empty old bottles of products into recycling bins where possible, throw non-recyclable goods into the trash can and empty. Donate unused products where possible to help reduce clutter in the bathroom whilst helping out others.

Bathroom Cleaning

Kitchen

  • Kitchen Appliances

Deep cleaning kitchen appliances can feel like a lot, but just tackle it one task at a time, like we're tackling your entire home one room at a time. Just make sure you're thorough. In addition to the usual sanitising and cleaning the inside of your fridge, freezer, oven, and microwave, don't forget the smaller tasks that are part of a deep clean, but are just as important.

We're talking about emptying the slide out tray in the toaster, cleaning steel appliances to make them shine. You can also vacuum fridge coils, wash trash cans and garbage cans after emptying them, and focus on cleaning your stove grates.

You may need to scrub hard if there is any baked food in the oven etc. Take your time here - the appliances and kitchen furniture are always the biggest jobs in the kitchen.

  • Kitchen Sink

Clean your kitchen sink until it shines, removing any old dish soap marks and unclogging the drain if drainage is an issue.

  • Floor

Brush and mop the floors.

  • Cabinets And Walls

Sanitise your cabinets and walls, paying special attention to those closest to the stovetop because they may have oil splatter marks etc. Clean doors of the cabinets inside and out, and tackle the handles too. Whilst there, organise your cabinets and throw out old products.

  • Garbage Disposal

Ice cubes and lemon peels down garbage disposal can help remove old food and freshen the smell.

  • Windows

Deep clean windows and window sills in your kitchen, too.

  • Washing Machine/Dryer

Most people will have their washing machine and dryer in their kitchen in the UK. They should be cleaned now too, as part of the deep cleaning. Spray the inside of your washing machine and wipe the drum and rubber gasket at the machine door. Run on the hottest setting. Then remove the lint tray of the drier, and use drier sheets to help freshen the smell of the next load of laundry and the machine itself.

Kitchen Cleaning

Bedrooms

  • Dusting & Polishing

The main thing you will need to do in the bedrooms is polish furniture and dust all of the hard surfaces. Don't forget to clean ceiling fans and picture frames too during this time.

  • Flooring

Next, you should vacuum all of the carpet in your bedroom, moving furniture if possible.

  • Upholstery

Vacuum curtains and upholstery using the upholstery attachment on your hoover to remove dust clinging to soft furnishings.

  • Laundry

Throw pillow covers into the laundry along with the rest of your bedding. Flip the mattress if possible. And wash pillows and the duvet themselves with a laundry detergent and water spray. Leave it to air dry before putting on new sheets to freshen up the bedding.

  • Shampoo Rugs

Any rugs can also be shampooed to remove old dirt and dust and get it looking its best again.

  • Organisation

Take this time to try on old clothes and donate anything you don't wear anymore, too.

Bedroom Cleaning

Living Room

  • Windows

Wash windows and window sills and declutter anything on the window sill that you have left there. Polish and dust all items on the window sills.

  • Vacuuming

In the living room, vacuuming will take you much longer than in other rooms. This is because you have lots to vacuum. Not just the floors, but all soft furnishings and furniture, too. Rugs, couches, armchairs - everything should be vacuumed here. It will take some time to remove all the pillows and cushions from the sofa etc to vacuum. Just take your time and work through it slowly.

  • Dusting And Polishing

All hard surfaces will need dusting and polishing. This includes the coffee table, side tables, TV, TV stand, fireplace, mantlepiece - make sure you tackle everything. You might also wish to clean any mirrors, too.

  • Doors And Walls

Wash down doors and walls to remove coffee spills and splatter. Concentrate on touch points too, and sanitise these.

  • Lights And Lamps

Clean lights and lamps. It's surprising how much dust accumulates in these areas, but when you clean them, you will notice an improvement in the lighting quality in the room.

  • Laundry

Wash throws and cushion covers before replacing them.

Living Room Cleaning 1

Garage, Yard, Outdoor Areas

  • Sweeping And Jet Washing

Sweep up any leaves, dirt, or miscellaneous messes and jet wash the paving in your yard/garden.

  • Gutters

Remove debris from gutters so they function correctly.

  • Outdoor Furniture

Wash any outdoor furniture. If it can then be stored away during the winter months, make sure you do this to keep it better protected.

  • Outdoor Appliances

Clean your grill or bbq. Again, if summer bbq weather is behind us, then think about storing this away to prevent rust.

  • Back Garden Maintenance

Mow the lawn, sort out the weeds and tend to the garden to get it looking great.

  • Wash Cars

Whilst deep cleaning your house, you may as well tackle your cars too. Vacuum inside and wash the outside of your cars.

  • Organisation

Organise your garage and shed, making sure you donate what you can and keep everything organised for easy use next year.

Yard Cleaning

Kids' Rooms

  • Vacuum

It's really important that you move kids' furniture around where possible to vacuum. Dropped snacks are all too common in kids' bedrooms and playrooms.

  • Toys

Plastic toys should be cleaned with a sanitising spray, and soft toys should be hand washed to refresh them and get them clean for the next playtime.

  • Sanitising

All hard surfaces should be sanitised, including handles and high touch areas.

  • Organisation

Donating any old or unused toys will help others and clear up space in your kids' rooms.

Kids Room Cleaning

Pets

  • Toys

If you have pets, then tackle their toys too. Soft toys can be hand washed or laundered, and hard toys can be sanitised and cleaned thoroughly.

  • Bed

Your pet bed can go in the laundry, too. This will freshen it up and remove that wet dog smell they're often famous for.

Pet Bed

Light Fixtures

ALL light fixtures and light switches should be tackled throughout the whole property during a deep cleaning.

Light

Carpet/Floor Cleaning

Deep cleaning of all carpet and flooring is important too. Washing your carpets is a good idea with a carpet cleaning machine, but if you can't get hold of one, simply sprinkle baking soda on your carpets overnight and vacuum the next day. It will remove old smells easily and make your carpet look and smell much better.
